A First Rate stay. -
A very pleasant two night stay in this family run hotel. I booked the room 24 hours prior to our stay via Michelin. The staff really couldn't have done more to make us feel welcome in their hotel. The room, though small, was as advertised and was immaculate and appeared as if it had recently been decorated/carpeted. It was functional and comfortable - the bed was very comfortable.A good point about the hotel, especially for the summer visitor, is its location;you can fall out of bed and then pretty much fall onto the beach a mere few hundred metres away - great for a late evening swim;essential to revive the weary traveler prior to having dinner.Food:Speaking of dinner - if you're only in the Paignton area for a few days then there isn't any real reason to hit the street (or phone) trying to find a suitable restaurant (it's pretty limited in any case in Paignton) - the meal we had, at Summerhill, was really very good, non pretentious, filling and served at appropriate times between courses - my rib-eye steak (cooked rare, as it should be, was exactly to my liking), I was clearly sated as I could only manage a sorbet for dessert... necessitating a further walk about the town to burn off further kilocalories. Top Hole chef.We had breakfast as part of our booking - and, as I said to Mrs. Wilks' (the proprietor) charming daughter, the breakfast (full English cooked) was 1st rate faultless - a really well balanced and hearty breakfast that didn't skimp at all with the quality of the ingredients and was properly cooked. Make no mistake this wasn't some greasy spoon pretender breakfast masquerading as the Full Monty, it was the real deal and freshly cooked - what a treat. A breakfast that would get a man, on his pushbike, over the Tamar and deep into Cornwall before him needing further victuals, make no mistake (I'd visit again just for this!)Summerhill has some really nice and relaxing rooms for guests to make use of downstairs. It's a nicely put together, solid, Edwardian building that's got bags of character, coupled with genuinely nice staff who clearly want their guests to have an enjoyable stay in the area... then to hopefully visit them again in the future. Many thanks for the stay.
